Most people have no idea what they want to do when they graduate, and
Ella Koscik was no exception. One of her jobs, post-college, involved placing
secretaries in jobs, and she wound up with her own clients.
A competitor hired her to grow his company, which she did, but because of differences with a
key executive, she was fired. You know how it is getting fired: the best thing that ever happened
to you, even if it doesn't seem that way.
Ella came to MDI —
Management Decisions International — an IT, finance and medical staffing company.
The owner, who wanted to retire, offered her 50 percent of the company in lieu of salary. She
quintupled the business and has long since bought him out.
From 10 consultants in 1994, they've grown organically to 650 today. And how do they maintain
90 percent retention of employees?
Work life balance, she says, coupled with a focus on who you are and who you aren't.
Ella has had a business coach for 10 years and she considers being a mom her main job. She is
married to the CFO, and every summer, she takes six weeks off to be with her girls.
