Well, Brian Patrick Cork is an example of how it works. In college, he's a star freshman Cross Country runner at Radford University in Virginia. But his coach felt he was selfish and declared, "you're only in this for yourself" – kicking him off the team, thus losing his scholarship.

His college roommate, frat brother, and future business partner was on the Lacrosse team and got Brian to join. Again, he was lambasted for not passing the ball. Again a coach threatened, and this time, Brian listened. He and his roommate became the core of the team's success.

Today Brian is managing partner of Brian Cork Human Capital, a global recruiting and executive search firm that serves clients from midsize to the Fortune 50.

Named to the Inc. 500 this year, he is featured in the September issue.
